cultivating clinical experience
There is never a “regular day” at Temple Health. The wide range of patient cases we see is invigorating and the variety of treatment options we offer is impressive. Collaborative, high-quality care reigns supreme at Temple. It’s a clinical environment that will drive you, inspire you, and leave you wondering how you ever worked anywhere else.
“There is nothing more important than safe, high-quality patient care—period. That’s the attitude we all have at Temple. The level of clinical care is extremely high here. Every faculty member is committed to doing what’s right for the patient. It’s very satisfying to work for an organization like that.”
- Kartik Shenoy, MD
Thoracic Medicine and Surgery

At Temple, we have some of the country’s best heart transplant outcomes and have performed more lung transplants than any other program in the U.S. for the past three years.

There’s always something new at the Temple Lung Center—from bronchoscopic lung volume reduction to being the region's first to combine imaging technologies to biopsy and stage lung nodules in one procedure.

We pride ourselves on serving the basic health care needs of our community while also providing some of the most advanced services available anywhere.

With institutional support our clinicians are empowered to develop novel programs to meet patient needs. In fact some of the country's leading experts in pulmonary hypertension chose to come to Temple.

Physicians come to Temple to do things they can’t do anywhere else. Our MDA/ALS Center for Hope offers clinical care while performing and applying relevant research.

We’re committed to raising the standard of care by adding innovative treatment modalities. That includes a dedicated effort to recruit faculty who specialize in these procedures.

Founded more than 20 years ago, the Temple Burn Center treats more burn patients than any other in the region. It’s a hub of research activity too, with center doctors pioneering and testing the latest advances.

While many of our differentiating programs are located at the main hospital, we are proud that our campuses offer advanced academic medical care to their immediate community.
Expertise in critical care
Hospitals throughout the region rely on the experts at Temple Health to care for their most critically ill or injured patients. In fact, more than 70 hospitals transfer their sickest patients to Temple each month.
We support our clinicians who not only provide excellent patient care but are also innovators in their fields. For example, Director of Vascular and Endovascular Medicine Dr. Riyaz Bashir developed a new catheter to deliver clot-busting medication into the peripheral vasculature.

Advanced Technology to Succeed
The engine of innovation is often powered by technology at Temple Health. But it’s the users of the technology that bring it to life. From our hybrid operating rooms to our surgical robots and advanced imaging capabilities, our clinicians harness technology to provide innovative patient care.
“We’re doing some of the most technologically advanced reconstructive urologic surgery in the world at Temple. It’s because of the technology we have here that we’re moving our field forward. That includes best-in-class operating rooms and robotic platforms. Temple also gave us the infrastructure and funding to run a division that enables us to drive this work forward.”
- Daniel Eun, MD
Urology

It's been said that, "If you build it, they will come." For hospitals, that means recruiting excellent physicians by providing the most advanced technology. And at Temple, those tools aren’t limited to our main campus.

Integrating a CATH lab with a traditional OR, our hybrid ORs equip our physicians with everything they need to provide efficient care for complex procedures.

To provide the highest-quality care for our patients, we make sure our surgical teams have access to spacious rooms with the latest imaging technologies.

Innovation drives advances in care—and sometimes, it’s about using multiple technologies together. That happens all the time at Temple.

All of Temple Health is integrated into the Epic EMR system. This helps us optimize patient care by making it easy for care teams to collaborate and interact, and also spotlight areas for efficiencies.
We’re always looking to give our clinical staff the latest and greatest, so we regularly support the addition of modernized procedural spaces.
Temple has invested heavily in robotic surgery and is home to one of the world’s most advanced robotic ORs. Our clinicians have everything at their fingertips to perform procedures with precision; the suites also include observation rooms for training, while two of the ORs feature privacy glass.

Opportunities for Research Innovation
Research surrounds you at Temple Health. It’s taking place in the labs at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, in our hospital exams rooms, and in the neighborhoods around us. With supportive leadership, collaborative-minded colleagues, and a diverse patient population, Temple is the ideal place to stake your research claim.
“I went to medical school at Temple and one of the things that drew me back was the ability to do research that I was invested in, at a place that supports me, and with patients who can benefit from my work. My colleagues in other departments have been very willing and wonderful research partners—it’s a very supportive environment. I can’t imagine not being in North Philadelphia and not doing the work I’m doing.”
- Sharon Herring, MD
General Internal Medicine
developing therapies to reverse heart failure
We’re raising the bar in the laboratory, at the hospital bedside, and in our physician offices to dramatically improve the lives of patients with heart disease.

At Temple, where research interests range from head and neck cancer to jaw reconstruction, Dr. Oneida Arosarena gets to explore the topics that fire her interest—and are driven by the needs of our neighbors.

Dr. Erin Camac treats cases from every aspect of pulmonology. And she’s able to involve many patients in clinical trials. As a national leader in pulmonary research, Temple offers dozens of clinical trials.

Substance abuse and dependence is one of the most pressing health issues. We’re working on the science of it every day at Temple, where Dr. Ellen Unterwald leads the Center for Substance Use Research.

Taking lab discoveries to benefit patients isn’t always easy. Our Center for Translational Medicine is committed to enhancing basic scientific discoveries to improve patient care.
Temple researchers Step Closer to a cure for human HIV infection
Groundbreaking—there’s no other way to describe the research of Dr. Kamel Khalili and his team at Temple. Partnering with colleagues from across the country, they have successfully edited SIV—a virus closely related to HIV, the cause of AIDS—from the genomes of non-human primates. This breakthrough brings the research team closer than ever to developing a cure for human HIV infection.

Impacting Healthcare Through Education
Teaching is a strength at Temple. No, it’s more than that—it’s a point of pride. “I trained at Temple” is a mark of honor in the medical community, an indication that you have been well prepared. That’s a tribute to our faculty. Helping our students and trainees build their skills and go on to thrive in their careers—there’s nothing better. If you love teaching, Temple Health is the place for you.
“Teaching future physicians is one of the best parts of working at Temple—we all thrive on it. It’s so satisfying to teach trainees a skill or concept and then watch as they turn around and do the same for others. There’s a real sense of pride in that.”

We have a great track record of placing outstanding young doctors in the jobs of their choice. Every faculty member is committed to their development as clinicians, as educators, and as researchers.

Before they’re ready to practice on patients, our students learn on the next best thing. Our clinical simulation center provides tools that help learners grow their skills and enhance their clinical decision-making.

In our ever-evolving curriculum, traditional lectures share space with hands-on learning opportunities to teach the true art and science of “doctoring.”

Who says a library is only for books? At the Ginsburg Health Sciences Library, the Innovation Space offers virtual reality equipment and 3D design software and printing.

Real learning happens once new doctors step out of the lecture hall and into the thick of patient care. Our training sites provide advanced care to thousands of patients from across the region.

Our students get clinical experiences that few other academic medical centers can match. Training sites include hospitals and specialty centers across Temple Health and educational affiliates in a variety of settings.

Even before earning their degrees, medical students can make their mark on their fields. Our research enterprise has grown dramatically over the past decade, and it’s all hands on deck.

Motivated learners have a seat at the table —literally. With faculty support, medical students and residents/fellows are empowered to participate in all aspects of their training.
Smarts, sensitivity, and service—that’s what we look for. Our medical students not only come from the highest academic caliber, they also demonstrate a genuine desire to help those in need. Compassion and sensitivity to others are hallmarks of Temple students, who relish the chance to share their time and talents to make our community healthier. And you will have the opportunity to share in their successes.

commitment to the community
Working at Temple Health will remind you why you chose to practice medicine. Our mission plays out right in front of you every day—to care for those most in need and improve their health. As the primary caregiver for North Philadelphia, we are an indispensable provider in America’s largest city without a public hospital. You’ll come to work every day knowing you’re making a difference.
“In many ways, Temple is a shining light on a hill. Advanced quaternary services that we offer aren’t readily available to a safety-net community. It would be easy for Temple to not offer these services, but we have an aspiration to do more. There is an enthusiasm at Temple to be involved in the community, especially among our students and trainees. They want to help, want to engage, and there are many opportunities to do that here.”

Our SAFE-T Program, an initiative led by Temple faculty and nursing and supported through dedicated fundraising campaigns, gifts Baby Boxes filled with sleep education and gear to all of our new moms.

Food insecurity is a serious social determinant of health in our North Philadelphia community. Temple is changing this equation through our Farm to Families program.

A helping hand from a friendly neighbor—that describes Temple’s Community Health Workers. They live and work in our community and visit our patients in their homes to link them with the support they need to enhance their care and health outcomes. The result? Better compliance with care plans, and fewer unnecessary emergency department visits and readmissions.
When our neighbors can’t easily make it to us, we go out of our way to bring health care to them. Temple constantly connects with the community to provide health screenings for common conditions.
Trauma Surgeon Dr. Amy Goldberg and Scott Charles, MAPP launched the life-changing Cradle to Grave program in 2006, one of the few hospital-based violence prevention initiatives in the country. During each two-hour session, which starts in the trauma bay and ends in the morgue, attendees witness the realities of gun violence through the story of 16-year-old Lamont Adams. Every year, more than 1,000 individuals take part; the program has been presented to more than 13,000 people throughout the world.
When we can’t put our heads together in person, we do it digitally. The Community Collective is a series of regular conference calls with Temple faculty, administration, and community members about how Temple supports our immediate neighborhood.

Commitment to Diversity
Diversity and inclusion–two words that get thrown around a lot in today’s world. At Temple Health, they’re the hard-and-fast principles that guide how we care for our patients, train tomorrow’s healthcare providers, build our teams, and create an all-embracing organization. While the journey is ongoing and ever-evolving, this commitment to diversity and inclusiveness is who we are and who we always strive to be.
“I did my residency at Temple and one of the reasons I stayed on as a faculty member was because of the diversity found here, among both our patients and staff. It’s not just racial diversity—it’s diversity in language, culture, religion, and lifestyle. I fit in here and my being here helps my patients feel the same.”
-Juan Diaz Quinones, MD
Clinical Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences
As the host of the annual Black Men in Medicine Symposium, the school’s Office of Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion addresses the national decline in the number of black men pursuing medical degrees. The event promotes networking and mentoring opportunities, while providing a place for young black men who are interested in medicine to meet and hear the stories of those who came before them.
One of our points of pride is how our faculty strive to make meaningful connections with their peers in medicine. For example, Temple’s Dr. Natalia Ortiz-Torrent was elected as the first Hispanic woman president of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and is president of the Society Ibero Latin American Medical Professionals (SILAMP). Her efforts help to open medical education opportunities and healthcare career options for the Latin American population in the United States (Photo credit: Al Dia News)
Reducing health disparities often means meeting where people where they are, in their daily lives. From wellness screenings to research studies, Temple’s Center for Asian Health (funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute) is one of the first programs in the nation dedicated to reducing cancer and health disparities among Asian Americans.
Equality is at the heart of our mission at Temple Health. Our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors are treated equally in a safe environment that maintains their respect and dignity. In fact, Temple University Hospital earned the designation of “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation three years in a row.

Valuable Teamwork
We reach our goals together at Temple Health. This team approach is how we improve patient care, become more efficient, and create a stronger organization. It’s how we tackled the COVID-19 pandemic—working together, lifting each other up. Every member of our team benefits from the strength, support, and encouragement of their colleagues and, in this way, is inspired to achieve their own goals. At Temple Health, one person’s success is everyone’s success.
“I talk about and encourage teamwork all the time. It’s what makes Temple Health work, it’s how we achieve success. We have so many talented physicians and staff members here, but what makes us better and what makes us stronger is our willingness to work together. Not only does this lead to success for the health system, but it also creates trust, good communication, and invaluable friendships.”
-Amy Goldberg, MD

Never has teamwork been more front-and-center—and more vital—than our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In less than a month, we outfitted an entire hospital to support patients with COVID, and just in time—in the first wave, we treated more COVID patients than anywhere else in the city. Overnight, offices became patient rooms, staff from throughout the hospital became COVID caregivers, and the larger Temple community came together to help supply PPE. To date, we’ve tested more than 40,000 patients for COVID and treated nearly 4,000. None of this would have been possible without the can-do, solid teamwork that is our stock-in-trade.
Be #TempleStrong
Our faculty and staff inspire our city. Temple proudly handles more COVID cases than any other hospital in the region. It is through this selfless dedication and commitment to the community that our Temple team rallies.

Patient-Centric Facilities
Providing patient-centric care goes beyond clinical decision-making. It starts from the moment a patient enters your facility. Temple Health is continually improving the patient experience by investing in facilities and services that create efficient less-stressful visits, such as renovated waiting areas and exam rooms, an on-campus pharmacy, valet parking, private maternity suites, patient discharge lounge and new parking garages. These investments have transformed Temple into one of the region’s most modern, welcoming facilities.
“We’re always looking to optimize the patient experience, from start to finish. What services do patients need? What will make them more comfortable when they’re here? What will help reduce their stress? Every improvement we make is done in collaboration with our clinical teams.”
-Tony Reed, MD
Chief Medical Officer

Spacious, clean, and full of light; just stepping into the Boyer Pavilion’s lobby on the way to an outpatient appointment, a scheduled surgery, or a visit with a family member promotes a feeling of calmness.

Stepping into a hospital can be an intimidating experience for patients. But the knowledgeable staff stationed in our lobbies help people get where they need to go and answer questions with cheerful smiles.

We anticipate our patients’ needs and design our spaces to accommodate them. For example, The Lung Center’s waiting area features oxygen hook-ups so that patients can worry less about running out of oxygen.

Temple makes wecoming a baby even more special by offering private maternity suites for laboring moms. Our specially trained staff support breastfeeding and bonding in those first hours of life.

Clean, modern, and equipped with everything our doctors and clinical staff need—we’ve renovated many of our exam rooms to be both aesthetically pleasing and completely functional.

Our ICUs have been renovated to be welcoming for patients and visitors alike, so that those in our care can put all of their focus on getting well.

We require employees to check in daily about any symptoms they may be experiencing.

We have added more sanitizing and handwashing stations and encourage everyone in our facilities to use them frequently.

We have reconfigured our waiting rooms to maximize social distancing.

We regularly clean and disinfect our spaces to keep the risk of transmission at a minimum.

Don’t just take our word for it—the TUH cafeteria was voted one of the best restaurants in North Philadelphia by area residents!

As a Baby-Friendly Hospital, Temple ensures all staff, patients, and visitors can feed their babies however they need to. Our Mamava Pod is for anyone to use; we also offer staff- and student-only mothers’ rooms in the Rock Pavilion and the Ginsburg Health Sciences Library.

The “bridge” from the Boyer Pavilion to the Parkinson Pavilion doesn’t just offer an amazing view, it also allows for patients, visitors, and staff to quickly access hospital buildings without going out into the elements.

We make every effort to make our campus safe and welcoming at any time of day; in the evenings, stadium lighting enhances staff and patient safety.

Earth Cup Café is well-loved by staff for its specialty coffee creations, delicious baked goods, and soup-and-grilled cheese comfort food combo!

From stir-fry to halal gyros, barbecue to fruit smoothies, and more, the food trucks parked outside the hospital on Broad Street cater to every taste.

Beyond Campus
What is your ideal clinical environment? Whatever your answer, chances are good it exists within Temple Health. Our network of hospital campuses, outpatient centers, and physician practices spans urban city neighborhoods and leafy suburban outposts. This variety, both in settings and patient populations, keeps your clinical experience and career path fresh at Temple Health.
“Normally, doctors hang their shingle and patients must go to where they are. Temple has flipped that model and put specialty physicians and programs in the communities where people live. This makes getting care much more convenient and less stressful. These different settings also present Temple faculty members and residents with a variety of patient populations and medical conditions, which enhances education.”
- Candrice Heath, MD

Nestled in beautiful Burlholm Park, Temple University Hospital -Jeanes Campus shares grounds with the Fox Chase Cancer Center. More than 100 Temple faculty have office locations and provide hospital care at this campus. Some of our most important strategic services are offered at this location including the Temple Heart and Vascular Institute, Temple Lung Center, and Temple Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.
We’re especially proud of Fox Chase Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, one of only 51 in the nation which diagnose and treat every kind of cancer and offer patients state-of-the-art and best practice treatments as well as clinical trials. Our researchers have won the highest awards in their fields, including two Nobel Prizes, a Kyoto Prize in basic sciences, a Lasker Clinical Research Award, an Albert Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research, American Cancer Society Medals of Honor, memberships in the National Academy of Sciences, and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

There’s more to Temple Health—far more—than just our health sciences campus. Our providers often see patients at satellite locations in Center City as well as the suburbs of Fort Washington, Oaks, Elkins Park, East Norriton, and Buckingham. Additional Temple University Hospital campuses are located in the Port Richmond and Kensington sections of Philadelphia to meet the health needs of our community. And our ReadyCare urgent care facilities in North Philadelphia, Port Richmond, and Jenkintown make it easy for patients to access care quickly.
When every minute counts, Temple Transport Team is there. Our fleet of ground and air vehicles provides critical care to support transfers from surrounding hospitals to Temple services. The Comprehensive Communications Center also serves as a dispatch hub for our ground and air division, as well as a system-wide Transfer Center for Temple University Hospital– Main Campus and Temple University Hospital–Jeanes Campus.
Our footprint is always growing as we form new partnerships across the region. Temple has a number of strategic affiliations with regional hospitals for shared-care models, including clinical oversight and physician/provider education. For example, the Temple Heart & Vascular Institute has developed a patient-centered shared-care model to provide advanced heart failure services to patients living in the Guthrie Hospital service area.
